Our Chickens are raised from chicks on our farm and handled regularly. They are raised on locally milled soy-free organic feed that we ferment with seeds and herbs. We raise our flock as holistically as possible. They free range our property, turn our compost, eat all our scraps, and spread cow manure to fertilize our land. We honor the chicken's natural egg laying cycle, which means we have limited eggs for sale November - March.
We hope to start offering hatching eggs from our breeding pen starting in February and will close orders in October.
Breeding Pen: Our breeding pen is a project we have been working on over the last few years with the goal of very heavy bloom, speckles, and a dark green color. We selectively breed for blue feathers, however there is a 50/50 chance of getting a black chick from a blue parent. The black chick can also carry the blue gene and produce blue offspring. This breeding program was created by putting a Blue/Silver Birchen Maran Rooster (dark teraccotta brown & speckled genetics), over dark speckled green, heavy bloom layers, and then consistently breeding those female offspring to dark green, heavy speckled, heavy bloom roosters. This year we plan on adding a few Chocolate Eggers, Olive Egger backcross, and Whiting True Blue hens to the flock with the goal of creating some layers with even darker and even deeper coloring, exceptionally high egg production low imput genetics and for some, adding a rose comb. This generation is blue or black with feathered feet. Some of have crests, and the black hens and roosters have a silver capes, hackle, and/or saddle feathers.
Backyard Flock: Our backyard flock is comprised of many variety of hens: Marans, Whiting True Blue, Whiting True Green, Leghorns, Wynadottes, Multi Generation Olive Eggers, Production Reds, Barred Rocks, Orpingtons, and more.
Egg colors from resulting chicks are not a guarentee as all of the chicks would be considered cross bred. We do not breed for SOP, but rather egg production, dual purpose properties, feather and egg color.
